Just a short 30 minute drive and voilà, you are in the historic capital of French Cornwall !
Quimper, meaning the junction of two rivers in Breton, is aptly named as it is located at the junction to the rivers Odet, Steir and Frout and is crossed by little bridges which are lined with pretty geranium-filled boxes.
Quimper’s most impressive building is its cathedral located Place Corentin, one of the finest examples of Gothic religious architecture in Brittany. The atmospheric old town, located just opposite the cathedral, is brimming with shops and restaurants. Many of the cobbled streets are lined with half-timbered houses dating back to the medieval period. Place du Beurre (where butter was sold) is one of the prettiest locations in Quimper and a great place to enjoy a delicious Breton pancake !
This town of art and history also boasts several museums. Next to the cathedral is the former bishop’s palace, now the Musée Départemental Breton. The Musée des Beaux-Arts at the end of Locmaria quay and the Musée de la Faïence (pottery museum) are also worth a visit.
Quimper is a delightful town, rich in history and heritage, but it is also popular for its gardens. Whilst visiting Quimper, take a stroll along the Odet quay or around one of the 4 gardens : Jardin de Locmaria, Jardin de la Retraite, Jardin de la Paix and the Théâtre Max Jacob garden.
